FKSPCA:  RESCUE TAILS / “ABBEY”

BY TAMMY FOX-ROYER
Executive Director Florida Keys SPCA

Abbey is an adorable, four-year old mixed breed dog that is now available for adoption at our Marathon Campus.  And thanks to a kind and generous donor, her adoption fees have been paid in advance!

Abbey came to us six months ago, along with her “husband” Buddy and her son Bentley. All three dogs had been seriously neglected for years and were frequently found at-large in the community.  Despite our pleas to the owner to surrender these poor, neglected animals, the dogs were forced to stay in a very harmful environment.

Finally, when the owner lost his housing, he relented and surrendered all three animals to the FKSPCA.  All three animals were heartworm positive and underwent expensive and dangerous treatment to rid them of these deadly parasites.

Buddy and Bentley were quickly adopted but poor Abbey had additional problems.  She had serious skin issues from an untreated yeast infection caused by flea infestation and her heartworm condition was more serious.  Abbey needs one more heartworm test to confirm that she is 100% negative post-treatment.  And other than a weekly medicated bath, Abbey is now completely healthy and adoptable.

Despite her rough life before coming to the shelter and her numerous medical treatments, Abbey always has a smile on her face and loves being showered with affection by the staff. And she just adores wearing hats!

If you have love in your heart for a dog that really deserves a new life, please drop by the shelter in Marathon or Key West or contact me at tammy@fkspca.org.
