FKSPCA:  RESCUE TAILS / “A HOUSE OF SCHNAUZERS”

BY TAMMY FOX-ROYER
Executive Director Florida Keys SPCA

Missy was surrendered to the shelter by a family who just couldn’t care for her anymore.  As she got older, Missy was not eating well and had started to bite her owners when they tried to help her.  They suspected that she might have cancer and they knew they could not provide what she needed to be healthy and comfortable.  Sadly, they thought she needed to be put down.

We took her in and had her evaluated by our vets. Fortunately, it turned out that her medical issues were not as bad as suspected and were in fact, treatable. Her teeth were in terrible shape, which was most likely why she wasn’t eating. Some grooming, a dental with lots of pulled teeth, and appropriate medications put Missy back on the road to better health and as she started to feel better, we began to see what a sweet little dog she was.

Older dogs like Missy can have a tough time finding a new owner but luck was certainly on Missy’s side.  When Judy came to the shelter, she was not intending to look for a dog. But her family were Schnauzer lovers, and when she heard that we had one, she just couldn’t resist taking a peek at Missy. A peek turned into a look, a look turned into a visit, and a visit turned into a love affair. It wasn’t long before Missy’s future was sealed and she was on her way back out the door to a new and wonderful home.

Today, Missy now lives with her two Schnauzer sisters Freida and Cookie and of course two humans who love her very much. Thank you to her new family and to all the generous donors to our medical fund who helped make this possible!!
