FKCC’s VIP Series features Heaney-Grier’s “Adventures of an Eco-Warrior”

Florida Keys Community College concludes its VIP Series with “Mehgan Heaney-Grier: Adventures of an Eco-Warrior.”  The presentation, led by the marine educator, ocean adventurer, and storyteller, is on Thursday, May 2 at 7 p.m. in the Tennessee Williams Theatre on the Key West Campus.

Drawing on more than 20 years of experience working above and below the waterline, Heaney-Grier will lead the audience on a journey of exploration, adventure, and ocean stewardship.  In sharing experiences from her pioneering freedive records, Hollywood stunt diving, and work on an elite team of explorers for the Discovery Channel, she will convey how a life of adventure can cultivate not only a deep connection with the environment, but also the sense responsibility to protect it.

A former Keys resident, Heaney-Grier established the first U.S. freedive record for both men and women, in the constant weight category and is an original inductee into the Women Divers Hall of Fame.  She holds a degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and Anthropology. She is also a mother, established micro-influencer on social media, and a strong female figure for young people around the world.

As an ocean advocate, adventurer and storyteller across multiple media platforms, Heaney-Grier is dedicated to raising awareness and empowering the next generation of ocean stewards to engage and tackle the critical issues facing our oceans today.

The acronym in FKCC’s VIP Series stands for “visions, ideas, and perspectives.” Sponsored by Centennial Bank, the series invites the community to learn from speakers of local, regional, and national prominence.  Tickets are $5 at the door.  Admission is free for students at FKCC and Monroe County schools.
