FKCC Graduates New Law Enforcement Officers

KEY WEST, FL, December 4, 2017— Florida Keys Community College held a graduation ceremony for 21 future law enforcement officers on November 16 in the auditorium of Coral Shores High School.  Fifteen cadets graduated from the College’s sixty-third Basic Law Enforcement (BLE) Academy and six cadets graduated from its twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth Cross-Over to Basic Law Enforcement Academies.  All graduates successfully completed the rigorous training program based in the College’s Upper Keys Center.  Upon passing the state certification exam, each will be eligible to become Florida Law Enforcement Officers.

Three graduates have already secured local employment with the Monroe County Sheriff Office (MCSO).  During the ceremony, Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay swore in graduates Justin Rivas, Mario Fajardo and Joel Torres, and presented them with badges reflecting of their new roles as law enforcement officers.

Cathy Torres, Director of FKCC’s Institute for Public Safety, recognized the best and the brightest of the class with special accolades.  Joel Torres and Latasha Almon were recognized for providing leadership.  Torres was also awarded for academic achievement as was Mauricio Martinez.  Yessenia Chavez and Jose Murillo earned physical fitness awards.  Mario Fajardo was dubbed “Top Gun” for his superior shooting skills while the coveted “PIG” award was presented to Justin Rivas for demonstrating “pride, integrity, and guts.”

FKCC’s BLE program satisfies the training requirements of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.  FKCC is currently accepting applications for a Basic Law Enforcement academy that begins in January at the Key West Campus as well as one that begins in May at its Upper Keys Center.  For more information about FKCC’s Institute for Public Safety, visit http://www.fkcc.edu/academics/basicrecruit/.
