FKAA Continues Cisterns in Paradise Rebate Program

Florida Keys – November 28, 2016 – The Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority is pleased to announce the continuation of its Cisterns in Paradise rebate program. The program provides a great opportunity for residential and commercial customers to receive up to $500 for eligible projects.

Qualifying projects include new cistern installations, conversions of septic tanks into cisterns, and refurbishment of existing, non-functioning cisterns.

Customers will be reimbursed at the rate of up to $1 per gallon of usable rainwater capacity, to a maximum of $500 for conversions and new installations. Rebates for refurbishment projects are calculated using slightly different criteria which take into account capacity and refurbishment expenses.

The rainwater captured can be used for landscape watering, car washing, boat washing and decorative fountains. The benefits go beyond conservation, however, as customers can reduce their water and wastewater bills for years to come.

A 2,000 square-foot roof can capture 1,200 gallons of water during a 1” rainfall. To date, 55 cisterns have been created with the assistance of this funding.

The program was implemented, by design, to coincide with the installation of central wastewater in the Keys,” stated FKAA Executive Director Kirk Zuelch. “The central wastewater project leads to the abandonment of septic tanks, providing a great opportunity to repurpose these tanks for rainwater catchment.

To apply, customers need to complete the rebate application available at any FKAA customer service office or online in the Conservation section at www.fkaa.com.
