Fifth Annual Key West NOW Women’s Film Fest

By Women, About Women, FOR Everyone

Key West – A historical drama, “Selma” and a medieval comedy, “Catherine Called Birdy,” opened the Fifth Annual NOW Women’s Film Festival to enthusiastic audiences. Two more engaging and landmark films directed by women are coming up, each Wednesday in March at 6 p.m. at the Tropic Cinema.

On March 19th, the godmother of the French New Wave, Agnès Varda, goes to a small French fishing village with a Parisian couple in 1955 in “La Pointe Courte.” Both the couple and the village are undergoing big changes, not so different from right now. A character- and place-centered film, this Vardas’s first film and sets the scene for her life’s work in cinema.

The last film in this year’s offerings, on March 26th, is “Desperately Seeking Susan,” Susan Seidelman’s comedic drama from 1985. Set in New York City in a darker time, Madonna stars as a femme fatale mixed up with a dangerous gang of thieves. A naïve New Jersey housewife gets mistaken for this savvy lady and gets dragged into the seamier side of the city. It’s Madonna’s first role. Audience members are encouraged to wear their 80s finest!

The Key West Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) promotes woman’s rights to reproductive health care, fairness in education and employment, freedom from violence, justice for LGBTQIA citizens and life without racism. The Tropic Cinema is an awarding-winning, non-profit theater presenting current and classic films of particular interest to the diverse Key West audience.

Tickets are available online or at the door.
