FEATURED ARTIST SHOW

See Key West’s past come alive, February 1st, 5-7:00 at the artists reception of Elizabeth Devries, a one woman show at the Key West Art Center, 301 Front Street, Key West. Show runs February 1st – February 14th.

Elizabeth Devries arrived in Key West in 1980 from Liverpool, England, never having had a hammer in her hand. Her art grew directly from the past 30 years of shutter restorations in Key West.  It was in the ‘90s when she noticed a jigsaw scrap that looked like a book. Her first creation was “ The Library”, the beginning of her life in art.

“I use only recovered Dade County pine and cypress from old Key West houses for the construction of my boxes.  Years and layers of Key West’s colorful past lie beneath the surface of the shutters used inside each box, the patinas created by years of rain and sun. Reds are from the shutters of Tennessee William’s House; lime green from Hemmingway’s house; light blue from Tom McGuane’s on Catholic Lane. Key West history is literally a part of my work.” States ‘Lizzie’, the Key West Shutter Lady.

Though always a 3D artist, her work is now interactive in that the viewer can move the characters for different story lines. Take for instance “The Cowboy”. She was at the gym when she first thought of a horse. With the excitement of a fresh idea, she rushed home to her sketchpad; how do I make the horse, how do I convey a trot? For Lizzie, it is the suggestion that tells the story. The horse is not an anatomical rendering, it is the intimation of the horse, it’s movement and the relationship between the cowboy and his steed.

Elizabeth was born with a gift, one she is both humble and grateful to possess. She works for the love of creating. “There is more in me!” she says. The door is ever opening to her visions, and yours … Tell her your story and she will recreate your life by way of her animated Key West shutters.

Opening night – Thursday, February 1st 5-7:00. Show runs through the 14th @ the Key West Art Center – 301 Front Street, Key West.  305-294-1241
