FAVORite Creatures of the Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges

Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge Manager Jeremy Dixon captures a handful of American crocodile hatchlings in order to measure and tag them, research that helps determine the survival of the young and to measure population trends. Dixon, who has lived in Key Largo for 4 years, is inspired by the many refuge volunteers and their dedication to the habitats and creatures that live in them. While he stresses the importance of never handling the wildlife, especially crocodiles, he encourages the public to get out into the refuges to experience them in a wildlife-friendly way.  “Outdoorfest at Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge gives visitors a chance to see and experience areas that are normally closed to the public,” he says. “By doing this, we hope to impart a knowledge of the wild animals and places and why protecting them is so important.” Dixon is part of the upcoming Outdoor Fest, created by the Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges Complex and their Friend’s group FAVOR to help people recognize the refuges as safe havens for the creatures who live in them while also educating them on how to enjoy the areas in wildlife-friendly ways. The Fest is set for Saturday, March 11th through Saturday, March 18th and is filled with family-friendly, mostly free outdoor adventures and hands-on activities. Visit www.favorfloridakeys.org/outdoor-fest for more information and to register for the many events offered—some, like special kayaking trips in Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge—have limited availability and a registration fee.
