Driveway Improvement Project Complete at Harvey Government Center in Key West

KEY WEST, FL – Monroe County completed a driveway improvement project last week at Harvey Government Center in Key West. The project replaced the grid and rock areas with a pervious material that is considered a safer, more efficient, maintenance-free drainage surface.

“The parking surface is state of the art. You can drive a bus over it, but water still flows right through it,” said Monroe County Project Management Director Cary Knight. This is the second County parking area to use this type of permeable surface. The first was used at the County-owned East Martello Tower when a new drainage system was added in March.

The site was prepared by Monroe County Facilities Maintenance with the assistance of a City of Key West arborist to ensure that the historic trees were not damaged. The new surface was installed by a local contractor.

The Harvey Government Center driveway project was funded through unused fees collected from the Monroe County Tax Collector’s office. At the October Board of County Commissioners meeting, Monroe County Tax Collector Danise Henriquez presented more than $4 million tax payer’s unused fees back to Monroe County.

“I was persistent on having it replaced because it was a safety issue,” said Henriquez. “Many people were tripping on the crates that were installed in 1997. It is a big difference, it looks great, and it is so much safer to walk across.”

In addition to the Tax Collector’s office being housed at the Harvey Government Center, the building is also used for Monroe County Veteran’s Affairs, Information Technology, and County Commission meetings.
