Driver arrested in Upper Keys chase

A 29-year-old Florida City man was arrested early Saturday morning for failing to stop for a deputy after he was spotted driving the wrong way on U.S. 1.

Robert Lewis Taylor was charged with reckless driving and fleeing and eluding.

Deputy Jose Hernandez was southbound near Mile Marker 101 at 3:46 a.m. when he was notified a car was driving northbound in the southbound lane near Mile Marker 97. Deputy Hernandez soon spotted the white, Dodge Charger, activated his lights and siren and turned around to make a traffic stop. The Charger failed to stop and kept traveling north in the wrong lane. The Charger reached speeds of 80 mph during which it forced multiple cars off the road with no regard for safety.

The Charger was forced to enter the correct lane near Mile Marker 106 after nearly striking traffic signs in the middle median. It then turned into the a turn lane and stopped.

Deputy Hernandez ordered Taylor out of the Charger at gun point. Other deputies arrived to assist. Taylor, the only occupant in the Charger, was arrested. When asked why he didn’t stop at Mile Marker 101, Taylor told Deputy Hernandez he didn’t notice him.

Taylor was taken to the Monroe County Detention Center on Plantation Key.
