Musical theater takes passion and dedication to sing, act, move, and dance all together, and in a small island such as Key West, several high school students are promoting this form of artistic expression with Drama Club through presenting comedy, romance, and tragedies at the Key West Theater. On May 4-6, there will be a noteworthy Key West High School (KWHS) Drama Club showcase taking place at the theater featuring the musical Legally Blonde.

Kelci Grooms, a member of the Drama Club, tells about the beginnings of this wonderful cast: “Our president Meghan Barter founded the drama club last year.” Barter is very passionate about theater. “The idea of going on stage and becoming a completely different character seemed like it was a great way to put your emotions out to others,” Grooms adds. Ever since Barter moved to Key West her freshman year, she began to miss theater, so she took the initiative and opportunity to start the Drama Club and share her passion with others.

Grooms explains how pivotal the staff at the theater have been in helping this fledging club grow and perform: “The director at the Key West Theater helped the Drama Club a lot by producing our shows and helping us fundraise.” Indeed, a major factor in the development of the Drama Club has been the amount of help they have received through other people who have supported them tremendously. “Juliet Gray, the director at the Key West Theater, gave us the space to do all the showcases and events we’ve been aiming for,” Grooms notes.

“One of the musicals the Drama Club aimed for was High School Musical, in May 2017,” Grooms explains, pointing out that this was the first musical the club has produced.  “The Drama Club members conveyed to me that this showcase was life-changing and a very fun experience, so hopefully people can come to our next showcase, Legally Blonde, and enjoy it.” Grooms points out that it should be a high-energy show, and she encourages people to come watch.

The showcase will take place at the Key West Theater at 512 Eaton Street. You may contact www.keywesttheater.com or (305)-985-0433 for more information.
