DKWPD Dispatch Earns Unit Recognition

During a recent awards ceremony at the Grand Key Resort, Key West Police Chief Sean Brandenburg presented a Unit Award to the Records Department.

In August the Key West Police Department was faced with a serious threat to the computer network. As a result, all servers on the network had to be shut down, including the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System.

Immediately, dispatchers developed and implemented a system of record-keeping for each call for service using paper cards, referred to as CAD cards. During the month-long shutdown, each call for service that came into the Communications Section had to be handwritten on a CAD card. The dispatcher would then dispatch the appropriate first responder to the call and actively write any pertinent radio traffic on the CAD card.

Due to their accuracy and efficiency in completing the CAD cards, the calls for service during the outage were easily entered into the CAD system once it was operational.

“The Communications Section’s efforts were vital in continuing their normal operation and service to our community,” said Chief Brandenburg.
