Diver airlifted to Miami Tuesday

A 34-year-old Florida Keys man was airlifted to Miami Tuesday afternoon after a dive incident off Marathon.

Charles Randall Grimes was airlifted by Trauma Star to Mercy Hospital after reportedly surfacing from a deep dive somewhere off Marathon.

The Sheriff’s Office was notified at 1:12 p.m. that Grimes was being taken ashore to Captain Hooks Marina and Dive Center in Marathon.

Grimes was semi-conscious and breathing at the time 911 Communicators were notified of the incident.

It was not immediately clear where off Marathon Grimes was diving, but he reportedly was diving at depths beyond 130 feet.

Detectives are still investigating what caused Grimes to surface quickly.

Grimes was reportedly in stable condition Wednesday morning at Mercy Hospital.
