Details Provided for Public Education Webinar on Potential Genetically Modified Mosquito Release

The Florida Keys Mosquito Control District (FKMCD) has announced  the time and date for a Public Educational ‘Webinar’ to discuss the potential release of male genetically modified mosquito as a method of effective mosquito control.

The webinar, which has been organized by Oxitec, will be held on the following date and time:

Tuesday, July 14, 2020

5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Participants are being asked to register in advance by clicking on the link available on the board meeting and minutes page available at keysmosquito.org. Registration is limited to 1,000 participants.

The webinar will be a hosted ‘panel’ format with representatives from Oxitec, Florida Keys Mosquito Control District, The Florida Department of Health in Monroe County and other experts available to answer questions and provide context about the potential release of male genetically modified mosquitoes for the purpose of mosquito control.

The Oxitec created project has already received necessary approvals for a trial by both the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Florida Department of Consumer Services (FDACS).  An FKMCD board vote to implement the project is still pending.
