Derrick Wilson Sentenced to State Prison on Drug Trafficking and Communication Device Felony Charges
Key West, FL – The Monroe County State Attorney’s Office announces the conviction and sentencing of Derrick Wilson in two significant narcotics investigations led by the Key West Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit, with assistance from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and support from the Key West Police Department’s K-9 Unit, including K-9 Dexter.
Wilson was adjudicated guilty and sentenced by Judge Mark Jones on multiple felony charges stemming from two separate criminal cases. His convictions and penalties include:
- Sale of Cocaine within 1,000 feet of a college or park (First-Degree Felony): 10 years in Florida State Prison followed by 10 years of probation
- Unlawful Use of a Two-Way Communication Device to Facilitate a Felony: 5 years in state prison followed by 5 years of probation
- Trafficking in Fentanyl (over 4 grams) (First-Degree Felony): 10 years in state prison followed by 10 years of probation
- Resisting Arrest Without Violence: 1 year in county jail
Wilson was also ordered to pay $588.00 in fines and court costs related to the cocaine case and $53,108.00 in fines and court costs for the fentanyl trafficking case. His Florida driver’s license was suspended as part of the judgment.
All sentences will run concurrently.
“These convictions reflect our commitment to prosecuting drug trafficking cases with determination and fairness,” said State Attorney Dennis Ward. “The combination of fentanyl trafficking and selling cocaine is especially dangerous, and our community is safer because of the work done here.”
Chief Assistant State Attorney Joseph Mansfield added, “We’re proud of the teamwork and interagency assistance and cooperation that helped bring these cases to a successful resolution. We especially thank the Key West Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, and the Key West Police K-9 Unit. I also want to personally commend Assistant State Attorney Carter Reeves, whose outstanding efforts as lead prosecutor ensured justice was served.”
Both investigations and arrests were led by the Key West Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit, with critical assistance from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, and narcotics detection support from the Key West Police Department’s K-9 Dexter, who played a vital role in the safe execution of search warrants.
