Death of inmate at detention facility

An inmate at the Stock Island Detention facility died of what appears to be natural causes. An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of his death and detectives will be investigating.

The 65 year old man was arrested by Key West Police in late September on trespassing charges. This was his sixth arrest in 2016. He had chronic medical issues and was housed in the sickbay of the facility. He complained of not being able to breathe well and the detention deputy assigned to the sick bay unit called for a nurse to come check on him. When the nurse arrived, he was unresponsive. Paramedics responded and he was rushed to Lower Keys Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Detectives are asking that his name not be released until they have the opportunity to notify his next of kin about his death.
