DANIEL HORTON-DIAZ PLEDGES BILL TO RESTORE HOME RULE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT CONTROL

Daniel “Dan” Horton-Diaz, candidate for Florida House District 120, has pledged to introduce legislation that would restore local government control and repeal SB 620 and HB 569, which together have been deemed the “preemption bill to end all preemption bills.” Horton-Diaz made his pledge while speaking to a large group of voters gathered to hear political candidates speak about their campaigns in Key West. The event was organized and hosted by Hometown, which is a non-partisan 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to promoting good government.

“I believe that local governments should be empowered to solve local problems,” Daniel said in a press release. “Local governments like Key West are being punished for passing laws that are widely supported by their voters,” Daniel said. “Once elected, the first bill that I introduce will be a complete repeal of the preemption bill passed this year in Tallahassee. I will then work to build a bipartisan coalition of legislators who also believe that local governments should be empowered to make their own decisions about local issues.”

“The Republican Party used to be the party of small government and local control. But over the past few years, it seems apparent that our Republican-dominated state legislature prefers to be the party of Big Government and overreach,” Daniel said, “I believe that there are good Republicans and good Democrats that can agree that local governments should be able to govern without overreach and interference from Tallahassee.”

Daniel is a Democrat, attorney, dedicated public servant, and proven leader with a track record of service to the communities of South Dade and the Florida Keys. He has a diverse political and government experience, having been the 2016 Democratic nominee to represent South Dade and the Florida Keys in the Florida House of Representatives, a Legislative Aide in the Florida Senate, the Florida State Director for a voting rights nonprofit organization, and the District Chief of Staff for Florida’s 26th Congressional District.

Daniel has a passion for service and has served in leadership positions with the FIU College of Law, Leadership Miami Program, and Chapman Partnership for the Homeless. His community service has received awards and recognition from the American Law Institute, FIU College of Law faculty, Leadership Miami Program, Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, and Miami-Dade County Board of Commissioners.
