Conch Republic Marine Army and City of Key West Team Up for the Clean Key West Challenge!

Following Hurricane Irma, the Conch Republic Marine Army (CRMA) was formed as a local nonprofit and led efforts to clean and restore the Florida Keys’ mangrove habitats, removing 275 tons of marine debris with the help of 5,500 volunteers.

Beginning in Big Pine in 2017, they expanded to Marathon and recently to Key West, operating weekly boat trips for volunteers to help clear rope, trap lines, and other marine debris from coastal habitats.

“Our mission is simple: restore mangroves, protect marine life, and engage the community in conservation,” says Captain Brian Vest, CRMA founder. “Whether through volunteering, sponsorships, or donations, every contribution helps preserve the Florida Keys’ vital ecosystems.”

Mayor Danise “DeeDee” Henriquez personally awarded the Challenges’ first donation of $900, which will fund one boat trip.

“The Clean Key West Challenge is meant to inspire other organizations, businesses and individuals that value our incredible marine resources and be a part of the solution,” said Resiliency Manager Alison Higgins. “The City of Key West has sponsored a debris removal trip, can you?”

Trip sponsors receive website and social media recognition, a Conch Republic Marine Army Supporter logo to use on their materials and most importantly, seats on the boat to come clean up!  Information on the Clean Key West Challenge can be found on the Conch Republic Marine Army website: https://www.conchrepublicmarinearmy.org/ or you can call them at 313-363-0543.
