Community Foundation Provides $235,000 More

For Ongoing Hurricane Irma Recovery Efforts

The Community Foundation of the Florida Keys (CFFK) has now provided a total of nearly $1.4 million for relief and recovery efforts since Hurricane Irma struck the Keys last September. The latest round of grants totals nearly $235,000 and supports 34 nonprofits throughout the Keys for ongoing recovery and rebuilding efforts. The grants are thanks to generous donations to the Florida Keys Emergency Relief Fund and the Landau Family Hurricane Relief Fund for the Upper Keys at CFFK.

The 34 new grants will help nonprofit organizations with repairs, cleanup, supplies and materials, and assist residents still in need. The $234,542 in funding complements several rounds of grants previously awarded to nonprofit partners that have benefitted tens of thousands of residents from Key West to Key Largo. Community Advisory Committees representing areas of the Keys (Key West, Lower, Middle and Upper Keys) reviewed applications to determine how to best meet the local area’s needs. The committees made recommendations to CFFK’s Grant Committee for final determination.

  • Anchors Aweigh Club, $3,810 for roof repairs.

  • DOLPHINS to Stop Domestic Violence, $1,000 for counseling services.
  • Educational Coalition for Monroe County, $5,000 for supplies for needy high school students.
  • Florida Keys Area Health Education Center, $10,000 for facility repairs.
  • Florida Keys Children’s Shelter, $10,000 for youth counseling.
  • Florida Keys Council of the Arts, $6,000 to support artists in the Upper Keys.
  • Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition, $2,500 to provide supplies for mothers and babies.
  • Florida Keys History & Discovery Foundation, $2,784 for facility repairs and equipment.
  • Florida Keys Land & Sea Trust at Crane Point Hammock, $10,000 for roof repairs to the Crane Point Museum.
  • Florida Keys Outreach Coalition, $2,000 for equipment and supplies for services in the Upper Keys.
  • Garden Club of the Upper Keys, $2,500 for facility cleanup, repairs and landscaping.
  • Glad Tidings Tabernacle Assembly of God Church, $5,000 for facility repairs and supplies.
  • Grace Jones Community Center, $5,000 to provide community assistance.
  • Growing Hope Foundation, $5,000 for restoration and repairs to Grimal Grove.
  • Guidance/Care Center, $16,000 for facility and equipment improvements, including costs for a new generator.
  • Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys, $16,000 for home repairs and construction costs.
  • Hearts & Hands Disaster Recovery, $10,000 to provide temporary housing for 50 households under construction due to damages.
  • KAIR (Keys Area Interdenominational Resources), $12,000 for repairs and supplies to Keys boats utilized for affordable housing.
  • Learning Center of Key West, $3,000 for daycare services.
  • Marathon Community Theatre, $7,500 for repairs and restoration of the theater.
  • Marathon Wild Bird Center, $4,950 for facility repairs, equipment and supplies, including pet carriers used to transport birds.
  • Matecumbe Historical Trust, $3,000 for property cleanup and repairs to the caboose.
  • May Sands Montessori School, $5,400 for roof repairs to an outside area used for meals and breaks.
  • Morada Way Arts & Cultural District, $3,500 for property repairs and equipment.
  • Sister Season Fund, $5,000 to provide rent and utility assistance for those still in need.
  • Southernmost Homeless Assistance League, $9,398 for roof repairs, cleanup and supplies for the Keys Overnight Temporary Shelter (KOTS).
  • Special Olympics Florida – Monroe County, $2,000 for replacement of equipment and supplies to provide youth programs.
  • Star of the Sea Outreach Mission, $10,000 for facility repairs and supplies for Keys programs, including programs specifically in the Upper Keys.
  • St. Mary Star of the Sea Basilica, $5,000 for repairs and equipment for the school playground, which is also used for a community summer camp.
