As the City of Key West moves into budget season, we are pleased to report substantial progress on the eleven project priorities set out by the City and Commission a year ago. Out of the eleven, three projects are complete or in the final stages of completion.

The new Frederick Douglass Community Center now serves the community in full capacity after opening in March. Last week, officials cut the ribbon on the new John Jones Navigation Center, and the Lofts housing project in Bahama Village is just weeks away from completion.

Other projects have been initiated and are budgeted. The Duval Street Revitalization project has begun with the City and consultants holding multiple community workshops and meetings with stakeholders. Mallory Square, too, has completed phase one of the planning with a series of workshops and community engagements. Planning on Bayview Park continues, and the first phase – resurfacing the ballfield – is moving forward. The Green Way project, aimed at safer transportation on the island, has completed the Final Mile segment and continues to move forward. The City has issued Request for Proposal on the Diesel Plant. Project development continues on Fire Station #3 as well as the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Pool.

In addition to these priorities, the revitalization of Clinton Place in front of the Custom House was complete earlier this year, and repair and revitalization of the Southernmost Point Plaza will begin later this summer.

“I am proud of our team’s capacity to look and remain loyal to our future, not our past,” said City Manager Brian L. Barroso. “Let’s continue to walk together to a brighter future.”
