Children can get an edge ahead with gravity-defying Key Lime Pie Drop designs at Key West Art & Historical Society’s Art and Design ArtCamp!

Key West Art & Historical Society’s ArtCamp!, a summer program for children aged 6-12, continues at Fort East Martello through August 9 with weekly themed sessions designed to get children thinking, moving, and making. Next up is Art and Design Camp (July 1-5), where campers will create unique works of art using various mediums and prepare their designs for the annual Key Lime Pie Drop challenge held Saturday,July 6 from 11:00am-2:00pm at the Key West Lighthouse Museum and grounds at 938 Whitehead Street.

Led by Crystal Smith, Jennifer Hernandez, and Daisy Connolly, the students will join Key West’s most creative minds in their attempts to outsmart gravity by creating design solutions that will allow them to drop a Key Lime Pie from the top of the lighthouse to the ground without damaging the pie! Campers who wish to participate in the Drop at the event can be registered for free by their guardians at www.kwahs.org/eventsand be on site to participate between 12pm – 2pm.

The camp, in operation for more than thirty years, marks Key West Art & Historical Society’s commitment to youth programming and educational initiatives that aim to inspire a greater sense of place and historical understanding about our island home.

Still to come arePirate Camp (July 8-12),Sci-Fi Camp (July 15-19),Wreckers Camp (July 22-26),Mario Sanchez Camp (July 29-August 2),andAdventure Camp (August 5-9).  Sessions are led by Rick “Deadeye” Wheelus, Kevin Lisinksi, Crystal Smith, Giancarlo Espinosa, Jennifer Hernandez, Stephanie Jenkins, and Daisy Connolly, talented artists, teachers, and historians with extensive experience with children. Ancillary activities and excursions can include field trips to local museums, beaches, parks, and gardens.

ArtCamp! runs from 9:00AM to 4:00PM, Monday – Friday and is $200 per session for Society members, $225 for nonmembers. Included are all supplies and light snacks.
