“Celebrate Shirley”

Honoring Shirley Freeman and hosted by the Florida Keys Democrats had over 65 guests, enjoying the 

music of Dave Bootle and even the singing of the evening’s honoree. The garden party and program was hosted by event sponsors Helen Walker and Leo Waters; Emily Maltz and Jean-Michel Artigaud; and Christopher Elwell.

 

Important in-kind sponsors that also made the event a huge success include Island House Key West Resort and Audio Video in Paradise. The Florida Keys Democrats 

raised over $20,000 to support its Get Out the Vote efforts and other initiatives throughout in Monroe County.

 

 After working in school administration for 20 years, Shirley served as a Monroe County Commissioner for five years and as Mayor of Monroe County for three years. Since 

retiring from the Commission in 2000, Shirley has been a community activist, helping protect Key West’s environmental and architectural heritage, and is a Founding Member of the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys and the Florida Keys Council of the Arts.
