Carlos Curbelo Gets His Wish, Supreme Court Rules Against Executive Order That Keeps Immigrant Families Together

MIAMI, FL – Today, Republican Rep. Carlos Curbelo got his wish as the U.S. Supreme Court blocked Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA), an executive order that keeps tens of thousands of hardworking immigrant families together and safe from deportation. Republicans who opposed the President’s actions, like Curbelo, got exactly what they wanted, to the detriment of millions of immigrants.

“It’s a sad day for immigrant families and the many activists who have fought for real change,” said Joe Garcia, candidate for Florida’s 26^th Congressional District. “When Republicans refused to put my comprehensive immigration reform bill to a vote, I supported President Obama’s actions. Now, two years later, Republican still won’t take up immigration reform, or even fill the Supreme Court’s vacancy, all while they continue to push immigrants into the shadows.”

Garcia was the author of the only comprehensive immigration reform bill in the 114^th Congress. President Obama took action to protect families and children of immigrants when Republicans blocked any attempts to pass immigration reform. Today’s split decision leaves the fate of DAPA in the hands of the conservative Texas court which previously ruled against the action.

When President Obama signed his executive order on immigration, Curbelo went on the air to support legal action against the move that protected millions of families from separation. In the same interview, he flatly said he did “not support amnesty,” and called for the deportation of children and teenagers detained during the 2014 border crisis.

In Congress, he has opposed the President’s use of immigration executive actions. He has also been a die-hard supporter of House Speaker Paul Ryan, even going as far as saying he is “always all-in for Paul Ryan.” The same Paul Ryan who pledged to take no action on immigration reform. Curbelo continues to endorse anti-DAPA candidates like Marco Rubio.
