“Boys and Girls Club of Key West Tour City Hall”

Thank you to the donors who continue to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Keys Area, they were very pleased to be able to take the students from the Key West Club on March 14th to a tour of the Josephine Parker City Hall at Historic Glynn R. Archer School located at 1300 White Street in Key West. The fairly new City Hall now houses City offices, providing efficient and easily-accessible customer service to the residents of the island.

It was here the students, pictured above with Mayor Craig Cates learned about the history of Glynn R. Archer school. They were eager to be informed that the new Key West City Hall was originally constructed as Monroe County High School. The front building and the Auditorium was completed in September 1923, and the rear building was completed in 1927. Over the next 90 years  the school served as a high school, middle school, and finally as an elementary school named after Glynn Archer, a long-serving local educator. It was also interesting for the students to learn that all of the heart pine wood from the original structure was reclaimed for use in the building or in other buildings in town. The new building was also constructed to meet modern Building and hurricane codes which was very useful during Hurricane Irma.

Boys and Girls Club of the Keys Area are very grateful for their donors and in continuing efforts to recover from Hurricane Irma would like to remind everyone that they are still able to waive all fees for children attending the Clubs in Key West and Big Pine for an extended period of time until June 1, 2018. This is available for current members and new members who want to join.
