Bowersox Play Chosen for Top 10 List

Key West playwright Bob Bowersox was recently notified that one of his plays has been designated nationally as one of the “Top 10 Unproduced Plays of 2016” by top Broadway producer Ken Davenport.

The play is included on this year’s “Broadway Black List”, put out annually by Davenport Theatrical Enterprises, and will be made available to all producers, theaters, and associated personnel in the hopes it will find a home for production.

“The Almost End of the End Forever”, which Bowersox wrote last year, is a fantastical story about the two iconic personages of Life and Death, and what happens when Death decides he doesn’t want to continue handling the job he’s had since the beginning of time. Originally titled “Life and Death”, the play had an enthusiastically-received reading at last year’s Summer Stage.

“The title change was Ken’s idea,” Bowersox said. “And he had some terrific ideas for certain changes to the script that made it tighter, funnier, and ultimately, better. It’s a great honor to be included on the Black List. Ken’s been really supportive of my writing.”

Davenport has become a force in Broadway production over the last few years. He’s produced such hit shows as “Altar Boyz”, “It’s Only A Play”, “Godspell”, “Kinky Boots”, and “Spring Awakening”, and he’s lead producer on “A Dog Story”, by another Key West ex-pat, Gayla Morgan, now playing Off-Broadway in New York. He was also just designated lead representative for all of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s interests in North America, a real plum for an American producer.

“The premise for The Black List – which was inspired by the Hollywood version – is simple,” Davenport said. “We went through all of the scripts that we’ve read over the past year and picked our ten favorites. We can’t produce everything we find, so our hope is, of course, that the work will be read by someone who may give it a shot.”

Bowersox has already found success here in Key West. He’s had three plays produced at the Red Barn, and his newest play, “The Return”, is now playing there, garnering rave reviews from audiences. It’s about what happens when a respected news anchor announces one night that he is not who he has purported to be over the years, but is actually Jesus Christ, revealing himself because the world is in such bad shape. Tickets for all remaining performances can be had at redbarntheatre.com/tickets or 305-296-9911.

“We’ll see what happens from the Black List,” Bowersox said. “The hardest thing in the world is to get your voice heard above all the other worthy voices shouting around you. Maybe with Ken’s Black List recommendation, someone will hear. Until then, I’ll just keep writing.”
