Big Pine Key Brush Fire Update

FIRE SUMMARY

Yesterday, fire behavior was moderate with some spotting due to spraying embers resulting in two spot fires which were quickly extinguished by firefighters. Crews continued to put in containment lines along the fire perimeter, knocking down heavy fuels and creating fire breaks.  Structure crews worked to secure properties and homes in the fire area. Light breeze kept smoke to a minimum and increased humidity during the evening hours kept fire growth to a minimum.

Today, with the addition of more equipment and crews, resources will continue to patrol and monitor the fires edge and improve containment lines.  Crews will also continue mop-up operations to put out hot spots and smoldering stumps and trees. Residents can expect additional smoke columns as temperatures rise and humidity decreases which, combined with green and previously unburned areas within the containment area continue to burn.

CLOSURES/EVACUATIONS: There are currently no closures or evacuations.
