The Key West Building Department would like to remind our citizens that unlicensed contracting in Florida is a crime that involves working on construction, repairs, or improvements without the proper license. It’s a serious offense that can result in jail time, fines, and restitution.
First-time offenders usually face up to one year in jail, 12 months of probation, and a $1,000 fine. Repeat offenders may face up to five years in prison, five years of probation, and a $5,000 fine.
Contracting without a license during a state of emergency is a third degree felony. Restitution may be ordered if the victim claims substandard work
The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) oversees contractor licensing. You can check a contractor’s license at MyFloridaLicense.com.
