Bert Bender Names David Salay and Haven Burkee Partners at Bender & Associates Architects

Key West – March 3, 2017 – Bert Bender of Bender & Associates Architects is pleased to announce new partners, David Salay and Haven Burkee, who have been with the company for 17 and 13 years respectively. The two will continue working alongside Bender who founded the practice over four decades ago. After stints at several high-profile architecture firms in San Francisco, Salay moved to Key West and joined Bender & Associates in 2000, where he has established himself as a leading preservation architect. Recent projects in which his skill set and expansive knowledge of historic structures has been integral include Key West City Hall, the Key West Custom House and East Martello.

A Cocoa Beach, FL native Salay received his Master of Architecture Degree from Tulane University. Burkee started at Bender & Associates in 2002, and has become a vital part of the practice as well, with a focus on sustainable architecture and contemporary design. In 2005 on a two-year sabbatical, Burkee received his Master of Architecture in Sustainable Environmental Design at the prestigious Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, England. In addition to numerous high end residential and commercial projects Burkee has recently completed several projects for Keys Energy Services including the renovation of their main offices at 1001 James Street in Key West.

“David and Haven are two of the most talented architects that I have had the opportunity to work with in over 40 years of private practice,” Bender said. “Haven is a tremendous design talent with a unique understanding of how contemporary buildings fit into their environment. David is a gifted preservation architect who is passionate about history and historic architecture. He understands the unique aspects of preservation and is able to get into the ‘guts’ of a building, returning abandoned treasures to the glory that they once knew. Both understand how buildings are constructed and how building systems interface. Their talents are complementary. Together, they will carry on the tradition of excellence that this firm was built on, and establish a legacy of their own that will live on long after I am gone.”
