Bales of suspected cocaine wash ashore in Islamorada

A fisherman returning from sea found between 40 and 60 pounds of suspected cocaine in a bale that had washed up under a dock along the 100 block of E. Carroll St. Saturday morning.

The fisherman said he noticed something floating and used a gaff and a net to pull it out of the water. The outside plastic was ripped and he cut a corner, which revealed a white powder inside. The man called the Coast Guard.

Sheriff’s Office Deputy Martin Digrius also responded. The package contained 25 smaller packages wrapped in clear plastic. The U.S. Border Patrol also arrived on scene. The packages were turned over to federal authorities.

Where the suspected cocaine originated remains under investigation.
