“AVENUE Q” – SEE WHAT ALL THE FUZZ IS ABOUT!
The award-winning Broadway smash, “Avenue Q,” has opened to raves and cheering audiences at the Waterfront Playhouse. Filled with gut-busting humor and a delightfully catchy score, “Avenue Q” is a truly unique show. Told with a mix of humans and all-too human puppets, the show is a humorous, but touching look at post-college life, before adulthood steps in and makes its demands. More “South Park” than “Sesame Street,” this show is definitely NOT appropriate for children.
“Avenue Q” has been a long-running hit on Broadway, having won the Triple Crown of Tony Awards – Best Book, Best Score and Best Musical. Entertainment Weekly raved, “‘Avenue Q’ is one of the funniest shows you’re ever likely to see. Just when you’re wheezing with laughter from the hummable, hilarious tunes, you’re blindsided by a beautifully sincere love song.”
“Avenue Q” tells the story of Princeton, who is fresh out of college and seeking his purpose in life in New York City. He moves into a shabby apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. There, he meets Kate (the girl next door), Rod (the closeted Republican), Nicky (the lovable slacker), Trekkie (the Internet sexpert), Lucy the Slut (need we say more?) and other colorful types who help Princeton finally discover his ever-elusive purpose. It’s part human, part fur and all heart.
The music and lyrics are by Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez (“The Book of Mormon”), and the book is by Jeff Whitty. Songs in this adult-themed musical include “It Sucks To Be Me,” “Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist,” “The Internet Is For Porn,” “I Wish I Could Go Back To College” and more.
Director Danny Weathers has assembled a cast of outstanding young talent that will blow audiences away with their phenomenal vocals, energy and spot-on comic timing. The cast consists of Brian Hall, Kristen Michelle, Jeremy Zoma, Lora Nicolas, Justin Ahearn, Juanita B. Green and Susannah Wells.
Michael Fauss is the musical director with Penny Leto as the choreographer.
The orchestra includes Michael Fauss (conductor/keyboards), Nancy 3 Hoffman (keyboards), Celicia Slafter (reeds), Gary Rivenson (bass) and guest drummer, Max Zemanovic.
Michael Boyer has created the onstage world of Avenue Q. Professional lighting designer, Kim Hanson, has been imported for the lighting design. Carmen Rodriguez is the costumer and J. B. McLendon is the props master. The puppets have been rented from Character Translation/MTI International and are based on the original Broadway designs. Trish Manley acts as Stage Manager.
AUDIENCE ADVISORY: “Avenue Q” is rated R for audiences 18 and up due to the adult language, themes and full frontal puppet nudity and sex.
