April is Fair Housing Month

Mayor Teri Johnston and the Key West City Commission have proclaimed April as Fair Housing and Community Development Month.

Although federal law prohibits housing discrimination, Key West takes particular pride in its acceptance of our “one human family.”

Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 is known as the Federal Fair Housing Act, which made it clear once and for all that discrimination based on race, color, religion, or national origin is against the law. In 1974 the US Congress also prohibited discrimination based on sex.  In 1988 the US Congress amended the law to prohibit discrimination against handicapped persons and families with children as well as protection to victims of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

The City of Key West, through its housing and community development programs administered by the Key West Housing Authority with the support of the Key West Association of Realtors, civil rights groups and community development organizations, supports the Federal Fair Housing Act and the principles it embodies.
