MARATHON – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requires that each jurisdiction within the 10-Mile Emergency Planning Zone surrounding a commercial nuclear power plant must conduct an annual outreach to local news media outlets.

The outreach includes general information about radiation and a briefing about Monroe County’s Emergency Plan in the event of a radiological emergency. The media is critical to providing information to the public in such an event. This outreach will explain where to go for the release of public information.

  1. The program’s agenda starts with a 50-minute presentation that will outline the following:
  2. How the Turkey Point Nuclear Plant Works
  3. Nuclear Emergency Response Structure (Joint Information Center, Emergency Classification Levels, Diagram of Organization)
  4. Nuclear Emergency Response Operations (Evacuation/ Shelter in place, Decontamination, Field Survey for Radiation, Evacuation Reception Center)
  5. Effects of Radiation on the Public (PAG, KI, policy/procedure)
  6. Effects of Radiation on Food, Water and the Environment (Protective Action Guidelines)
  7. Nuclear Emergency Messaging (Response Mode, including Emergency Alert System / EAS Pre-Scripted Message)
  8. Nuclear Emergency Messaging (Recovery Mode)

This presentation is followed by a question and answer period. This includes a review of information resources/websites/publications, which are included below. Please have a cursory knowledge of these reference materials prior to the outreach.
