MARATHON – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requires that each jurisdiction within the 10-Mile Emergency Planning Zone surrounding a commercial nuclear power plant must conduct an annual outreach to local news media outlets.
The outreach includes general information about radiation and a briefing about Monroe County’s Emergency Plan in the event of a radiological emergency. The media is critical to providing information to the public in such an event. This outreach will explain where to go for the release of public information.
- The program’s agenda starts with a 50-minute presentation that will outline the following:
- How the Turkey Point Nuclear Plant Works
- Nuclear Emergency Response Structure (Joint Information Center, Emergency Classification Levels, Diagram of Organization)
- Nuclear Emergency Response Operations (Evacuation/ Shelter in place, Decontamination, Field Survey for Radiation, Evacuation Reception Center)
- Effects of Radiation on the Public (PAG, KI, policy/procedure)
- Effects of Radiation on Food, Water and the Environment (Protective Action Guidelines)
- Nuclear Emergency Messaging (Response Mode, including Emergency Alert System / EAS Pre-Scripted Message)
- Nuclear Emergency Messaging (Recovery Mode)
This presentation is followed by a question and answer period. This includes a review of information resources/websites/publications, which are included below. Please have a cursory knowledge of these reference materials prior to the outreach.
