Andy Thurber: Island Cruisin

Andy called Nance.  She said, “Yes!”  “We have to!”  Andy said, “Yes, of course. It’s our 15th year together and we have to celebrate!  We can’t let Irma take that away.  We will bounce back, like Conchs always do!”

“The way people have gotten together in this storm is about the people and places that I paint.” Said Andy. “We are tough birds and we remember our past and how we have worked side by each all these years.”

“Ricky Spencer took the time to stop Nance on the street to tell her where I could find pieces of mahogany that washed up rounded by the ocean like sea glass.” He continued.

Last year Andy moved to Micanopy, near Gainesville, but his heart remains and his art stayed behind focused on his hometown. This years crop is inspired by Island events & Artists; El Mocho, starring Marlenis serving yellowtail with black beans and rice at their Stock Island Restaurant. Hurricane Party (painted way before the storm) is just the way it was done when we were children and big blows were FUN!

Andy’s homages or Odes to Artists Series includes;  several works allude to the late Jeff MacNelly, like Island Cruisin, there are Sunflowers for VincentCoconuts a la Peter Vey, A Fisherman’s Dream for Fabelo and of course, Ode to Mario, a bucket of fish lovingly carved like the Master.

“The Key West Comparsa will dance again too! I look forward to this every year.  Andy reported, All of these, dear friends will lift our spirits, together again is a wonderful thing!”
