Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month

Mayor Craig Cates and Vice Mayor Clayton Lopez this week declared the month of June as Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month.

“I just lost a good friend of mine to this disease,” said Mayor Cates. “It’s important to recognize it early so that they can get the care and medicine they need.”

Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive neurodegenerative brain disorder, tragically robs individuals of their memories and leads to progressive mental and physical impairments. Over half a million Floridians are living with the disease, and an estimated 1,660 live in Monroe County.

Nationally, some one million unpaid caregivers provide an estimated one billion hours of care. The Alzheimer’s Association estimates this year’s direct cost to American society to be in the realm of $259 billion.

“The human cost of Alzheimer’s disease is immeasurable,” reads the proclamation.

The proclamation recognizes the efforts of the individuals, families, friends and caregivers dealing with Alzheimer’s disease, and of the researchers who are seeking a cause or cure.

“The State of Florida and the City of Key West recognize the efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association to raise funds, provide care and support for those living and caring for someone with Alzheimer’s and promote awareness to fight Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders, thereby improving the quality of human life for those living with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers.”
