Accreditation Assessment Team invites public comment

On Monday, December 7, 2020, a site-based assessment team from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA®) will virtually review all aspects of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) policy and procedures, management, operations, and support services, Sheriff Rick Ramsay announced today.

“Verification by the team means that MCSO meets the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards and is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation—a highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence,” Sheriff Ramsay said.

As part of the assessment, MCSO personnel and members of the community are invited to offer comments during a phone-in public information session on December 8, 2020, at 4 p.m. by calling (305)-731-9884.

Telephone comments will be limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA Standards.

“Typically we open the forum to the public to appear in person,” Sheriff Ramsay said, “But, due to Covid-19 concerns, we are limiting the public comments to phone-in. We look forward to returning to in-person meetings in the future.”

A copy of the standards is available at the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, 5525 College Road, Key West, FL 33040. Local contact is MCSO Accreditation Manager Lt. David E. Smith (305)-731-9884.

“The MCSO has to comply with 374 standards in order to gain accredited status,” Sheriff Ramsay said, “Accreditation is for four years, during which MCSO must submit annual reports, and participate in annual remote web-based assessments attesting continued compliance with those standards under which our agency was initially accredited.”
