A Time for Helping & Healing

I hope all of you have “weathered” the storm and that you are getting some semblance of normalcy back in your lives – our new normal. I heard from several people who have been on the front lines volunteering for clean-up and transporting people to pick up food, prescriptions and supplies. Thanks to everyone who is part of the clean-up and assistance efforts!

Those who have been on the front lines have reached out to let us know that mental fatigue, angst and weariness are setting in, both with those who have lost so much and those that are trying to help them recover. A couple of friends had suggested that I help organize a few gatherings throughout the keys simply for the purpose of getting together for some “mental health” time. So I have been in touch with Scott Pridgen at AIDS Help and Tara Sullivan from AFSP who are donating resources and staff to put these gatherings together. The first two sessions are taking place this weekend in Key West and Big Pine Key.

SATURDAY, October 7th – AIDS Help is hosting the get-together at Poinciana Royale’s multi purpose room from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM. The address is 1341 McCarthy Lane just off Duck Ave. Light refreshments will be served. Children are welcome and we will have someone in the library to read to the kids while their parents are getting the information they need. Resource Identification Staff and Mental Health Counselors will be on hand to answer your questions.

SUNDAY, October 8th – we are being hosted at Lord of the Seas Lutheran Church located at 1250 Key Deer Blvd. in Big Pine Key. People are invited to attend the church service from 9:30 – 10:30 AM. Refreshments will be served after the service starting at 10:30 AM and the informational session will take place during refreshments up through 12:00 Noon. Resource Identification Staff and Mental Health Counselors will be on hand to answer your questions.
