A Boating Course That Could Save Your Life
The Key West Sail and Power Squadron offers the “America’s Boating Course” at the Key West Sail and Power Squadron, 5205 College Rd., Stock Island. The 1 1/2 day course will be held on Saturday, November 5th from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday, November 6th from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. An optional Charting Course addition will be held on Sunday, at 1:00 p.m. The ABC Course will give the individual their Florida State Boater’s ID card which is required for anyone born after January 1st 1988 to operate a boat of 10 horse power or more. This means that anyone who is 27 years old or younger is required to have the Boater’s ID card. The fee is $60.00 covers the cost of the materials and an addition $15.00 for a family member who is willing to share materials. For information, call Vince Melendy at 305-296-1126. The course is an introductory course which covers boat handling, elementary seamanship, navigation aids, weather, marine radios, Florida boating regulations and more. Completion satisfies the MANDATORY Florida state boating certification requirements. The optional charting section introduces the concepts of plotting.
The Key West Sail and Power Squadron is a non-profit boating and safety organization that offers a variety of boating courses. Completion of this course and Squadron membership entitles you to reduced fees for advanced courses such as seamanship, piloting, cruise planning, weather, sailing and marine electronics.
