Key West NOW Women’s Film Fest Opens Wednesday, March 6
By Women, About Women, FOR Everyone
Key West – It’s here! The Fourth Annual Key West NOW Women’s Film Festival opens Wednesday, March 6 with the first of four fabulous films: Ava Duverney’s directorial debut, “I Will Follow” at 6 p.m. at the Tropic Cinema. It continues for another outstanding film each Wednesday in March. All films are award-winning efforts, directed by women, in a wide variety of categories.
“I Will Follow” is an intimate portrait of family struggles, emotional attachment and career decision-making. Released in 2010, this won DuVernay Best Screen Play (African-American Film Critic Association) and nominations for Best Director, Best Film, critical and audience accolades. Maye (Salli Richardson-Whitfield) is returning to her successful and demanding professional life after a year of caretaking her dying aunt, a well-known LA studio musician. Conflicts with her aunt’s daughter, her old boyfriend, and a new love interest, all conspire to complicate her future. A beautiful, tenderly-told story of universal issues, particular to this Black woman, predicts DuVernay’s pioneering and productive career, directing “Selma,” “13th,” “A Wrinkle in Time,” and most recently, “Caste.” Duvernay was chosen for the 2017 Time Magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people.
“A New Leaf” screens March 13th. Written, directed and starring comedy icon Elaine May, “A New Leaf” follows a broke playboy (Walter Mattau) as he hits bottom and makes a plan to find a rich wife to murder. May’s clueless, obsessive botanist character seems the perfect match. It’s a madcap, hilarious, black comedy and a cult favorite. March 20th is the date for “One Sings, the Other Doesn’t,” French New Wave’s goddess Agnès Varda. Varda follows two friends as they negotiate 14 years of radical change in women’s lives in France. The final film, “I Am a Noise,” on March 27th, documents the life of folk music legend and activist icon Joan Baez through the many phases of her long and productive life.
“We are delighted to present our fourth year of important films by visionary women,” said festival coordinator Andrea Henley Heyn. “There is something for everyone: something thought-provoking, something funny, something revealing a unique point-of view on universal topics.”
All showings begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Tropic’s spacious Carper Theater. Tickets are available online at https://www.tropiccinema.com or at the door.
