Tropic Sprockets / How to Blow Up a Pipeline
By Ian Brockway
From director Daniel Goldhaber (Cam) comes “How to Blow Up a Pipeline,” an excellent thriller that compels the eye throughout its run. Magnetic, anxious, thoughtful, and thorough, the narrative is not only a suspense story, but also functions as a rich character study.
The film (based on a book of the same name by Andreas Malm) possesses a great understated quality illustrating the sincere heartfelt qualities of several young adults. They are committed to eco terrorism in defense of the earth, which they seriously believe is under attack by dirty energy and carbon emissions. Although the characters in this story might be on the edge and somewhat battered, by no means are they malevolent, and each character has a deep empathy for planet earth.
Michael (Forrest Goodluck) is a Native American frustrated by the lack of respect and dignity he has gotten as a protector of the land. Theo (Sasha Lane) is a cancer patient. Dwayne (Jake Weary) has been in foreclosure. Xochitl (Aereila Barer), Alisha (Jayme Lawson) Logan (Lukas Gage) and Shawn (Marcus Scribner) are dedicated fighters. Rather than pass judgment, this film illustrates the peril and danger of forcing change by violent means.
This film is impactful and immediate and has scenes worthy of “The Sorcerer” (1977). The catalyst here is oil rather than nitroglycerin.
Each person illustrated has great worries, thrills, and joys. Michael himself vibrates with great charge. He is clearly plagued and bullied by white Anglo-Saxon Protestants and feels he has nowhere to turn.
This is a film that will make you nervous in a very direct and meaningful way, yet the story is never without empathy and spirit. Not only are the characters here driven by purpose, they also reveal a tremendous vulnerability in their passion.
Just as history has shown before, violent actions and protests provide no simple outcomes.
