Letter to the Editor / ONE FOR ALL, ALL FOR ONE
By Roger Kostmayer
How should former Senator and Vice President Joe Biden answer the question posed by Senator Bernie Sanders, his competitor ? The friendly question by one presidential candidate to another was essentially – “What will you, Joe, do to solve what my followers and I believe are our nation’s most important challenges?” The list included, but wasn’t limited to: Affordable health care for all; global warming; Justice reforms for minorities, guns; voter suppression; Affordable higher education. This was a tough but fair question for the March 15 debate between the two of them, and Joe needs to explain his pragmatic progressive approach.
The televised answer must be straight, simple, truthful and doable, and the VP should avoid the teleprompter. Following is a 3 point sample response. “First, we have to decide what our country needs the most. My friend Bernie’s list is a good one – but he neglected the one that’s both most important and most urgent, and that is beating Trump and replacing him with an American President who will unite the people and produce real solutions.
Second, the question then is, how will I do that if I have the honor of being President of ALL the people. The answer is, by first uniting the Democratic Party and, with help from you and your followers, Bernie, continue our momentum toward a huge voter participation on November 3rd. What’s most important for all of us is winning the US House, the Senate and the White House in order to be able to implement the solutions that you and I, and the American people, all need and want. It will require working across the aisle and encouraging the people, conservatives and liberals, to continue to express themselves. Roughly 70% of Americans want their public servants to work together on Guns, Infrastructure, Healthcare, the National Debt, Foreign policy, Taxes, Jobs and the economy. I have no interest in failed ideological purity, or allowing the perfect solution to kill the best possible solution.
Finally, this can happen with a Biden presidency because, with your help, I will focus all of our collective energy and resources on replacing the most dangerous and destructive president in American history. The Biden administration can be the bridge to the future that enables us, ultimately, to attain our most aspirational goals.”
