Woman arrested for leaving the scene of ATV crash 

A 69-year-old Conch Key woman was arrested Wednesday evening after flipping an all-terrain vehicle with two juveniles aboard and leaving the scene without notifying law enforcement or paramedics.

Linda Hempstead was charged with hit and run with injuries. She was also cited for driving an unlicensed vehicle and driving with a suspended driver’s license.

Traffic Enforcement Unit Deputy Shaun Lones and Deputy Garrett Bragg responded to 80 block of North Conch Avenue at 7:23 p.m. regarding an overturned ATV with injuries. Deputy Lones arrived to find paramedics treating to female juveniles — both 10 years of age. Neither juvenile suffered life-threatening injuries. The juveniles stated they were in a black Polaris Razor ATV with Hempstead behind the  wheel. They stated Hempstead was driving  them around the neighborhood. The juveniles stated Hempstead lost control of the ATV at one point and the ATV flipped over, ejecting one of the juveniles while pinning the other juvenile under the roll cage.

Good Samaritans lifted the ATV off the one juvenile and began rendering aid to the other. They also called 911.

The juveniles stated once the ATV was flipped upright by the good Samaritans, Hempstead got back into the ATV and drove back to her residence on Conch Key. Both juveniles stated they did not see Hempstead attempt to notify law enforcement or paramedics of the crash.

One of the juveniles was treated at the scene and released to her parents. The other juvenile was taken to Fishermen’s Hospital for treatment to non-life threatening injuries.

Deputy Lones went to Hempstead’s home. Deputy Lones asked where the ATV was and Hempstead took him to a neighboring house where the ATV was parked. Hempstead said she didn’t know how or why the ATV was parked at a neighboring property.

Hempstead she didn’t think it was necessary to call 911 after the crash and that she didn’t think it was necessary to stay at the scene of the crash.

Hempstead was taken to jail.
