KEY WEST MARDI GRAS TO LIGHT UP AMPHITHEATER SKIES
4th Annual Ball and Tableau Unveils as “Mystique of the Far East”
Celebrating a year of civic and charity efforts to support local organizations, the Mystick Krewe of Key West will stage its 4th Annual Bal Masque and Tableau Saturday Night under the stars at the Key West Amphitheater. The 300-member organization was founded in 2015 to provide locals with its own carnival celebration with a Key West twist of quirkiness and diversity for which the city is known.
“Our 2019 theme, “Mystique of the Far East,” allows our members and guests to practice a time honored Key West tradition of attending a grand ball in exotic and elaborate costumes,” said ball chair, Kris Pabian. “Attendees will be treated to grand local entertainers in a set produced by Erin McKenna and dining will reflect the eastern traditions.”
The highlight of the evening is the Krewe Tableau, styled after the grand French and New Orleans traditions where Lieutenants and Muses adorn the stage to form a visual representation of the year’s theme. As the court arrives, all anticipate the entrance of the King and Queen of Key West Mardi Gras, Chase Hurst and Diane Eliopoulos, escorted to the stage by local dignitaries.
“We have worked hard to make the Key West Mardi Gras as grand and meaningful as other carnival celebrations around the world,” said Krewe captain and Louisiana native, Val Marmillion. “Our costuming and decor is authentic and the Ball and Tableau rituals reflect the revelry and mirth associated with such events that suspend reality for a night and crown a mystical King and Queen. It is all for fun and partying with a purpose,” noted Marmillion.
The purpose and civic promises of the Krewe are found in a number of fundraising activities to support local charities. In the past year, members worked to raised and donate $65,000.00 to organizations in need after Hurricane Irma, including Sister Season Fund, Wesley House, and local school lunch programs to supplement payment where need exists. The Krewe is also proud of its support for the Key West High School Band, making multi-year contributions to help ensure that band member march with new uniforms and bring pride to the community.
The Annual Key West Mardi Gras Ball is attended by Krewe of Key West Members and the public who wish to enjoy the spectacle of the carnival season. Tickets may be purchased for $150.00 at https://squareup.com/store/kreweofkeywest .
