MONROE COUNTY CLERK OF COURT DELIVERS FIRST CLEAN COUNTY AUDIT IN FOUR YEARS
The Monroe County Clerk of Courts today released the Monroe County Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for the fiscal year that ended September 30, 2017. The CAFR contains the County’s financial statements and the independent auditor’s opinion on the accuracy and completeness of the statements.
For the first time in four years, the audit report contained no findings, according to Clerk of Court Kevin Madok.
Findings are deficiencies that the auditors are required to formally report to State Regulators and to the public.
“I am proud of the clean audit report, which provides the public with confidence that all financial reporting is accurate, open and transparent,” Madok said.
In addition, for the first time in four years, the Clerk’s Office did not contract with an outside CPA firm to prepare the CAFR and perform other complex, year-end financial work. All work was completed in- house by the Clerk’s Finance Department staff.
Outsourcing the preparation of the CAFR over the past four years has cost Monroe County taxpayers approximately $750,000.
The clean audit was achieved despite unprecedented challenges the Clerk’s Finance Department faced due to Hurricane Irma. The Category 4 storm forced the closure of County offices for the critical final three weeks of the fiscal year. Irma caused a great deal of additional and complicated accounting work at the same time the Clerk’s Finance staff were beginning their year-end audit work.
The auditors also are required to evaluate and report on the status of problems noted in past County audit reports. All past reported problems have been corrected.
A copy of the recently released CAFR is available to the public at the Clerk’s website at http://www.clerk-of-the-court.com/other/Fin_Main.asp.
