HURRICANE IRMA MARINE DEBRIS CLEANUP BEGINS IN KEYS

When: Friday, Feb. 16, 10 to 11 a.m.

Where: Big Pine Key, FL (LOCATION: Vicinity of 31343 Avenue I. It is canal #290, which had muck removal and an air curtain installed as one of the County’s canal restoration demonstration projects)

What: Availability to see contractor remove hurricane marine debris from a severely impacted canal on Big Pine Key and to interview officials and staff involved with the cleanup efforts.

Who: Department of Environmental Protection Branch Manager Gus Rios, Monroe County Mayor David Rice, Monroe County Commissioner George Neugent, Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi and Monroe County Director of Sustainability Rhonda Haag.

Background:  Last week, Monroe County signed an agreement with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection that states DEP will lead the hurricane marine debris removal effort of the impacted canals and nearshore waters of unincorporated Monroe County. DEP hired DRC Environmental Services to do the work. DEP will oversee the $6 million operation with Monroe County staff providing local coordination.
