MONROE COUNTY FIRE RESCUE RESPONDS TO FUEL TANKER/UTILITY TRUCK COLLISION ON CUDJOE KEY
CUDJOE KEY, FL – Monroe County Fire Rescue responded at about 1:15 p.m. to an accident involving an apparent head-on collision between a fuel tanker going northbound and a line truck at mile marker 21 on the Overseas Highway near Blimp Road on Cudjoe Key.
The driver of the tanker truck was transported to Lower Keys Medical Center. The driver of the other truck involved in the accident did not require hospitalization.
The Overseas Highway was closed for more than three hours in both directions as crews worked to safely deal with the tanker’s load of 3,400 gallons of unleaded fuel and 1,500 gallons of diesel fuel, which are highly flammable and explosive.
An unknown amount of fuel spilled onto the roadway and into the mangroves. MCFR crews sprayed foam and contained the spill.
The Environmental Protection Agency and other pertinent agencies were notified.
