With two preseason games and four regular season games under their belts, the Key West High baseball team opens its District 16-4A season against Keys Gate High at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, at Rex Weech Field.

After dismantling a pair of opponents with batting and pitching in the two preseason games, Coach Ralph Henriquez’s squad had trouble collecting hits in a weekend series against Rockledge High, a highly regarded Class 5A team.

The Conchs won Friday’s game, 2-1, behind five innings of no-hit pitching from Greg Veliz and two innings of one-hit ball from Stevie Wells. However, in scoring its two runs, Key West was only able to pick up four hits, a double from Wells, a run-scoring single by Veliz and a single and double from Hunter Sellers.

Saturday night, the visiting Raiders laid on a 6 -1 defeat of the Conchs, who had only three hits, two singles by Hugo Valdes and another single by Wells.

The Conchs also had non-district games Tuesday and Wednesday against Canterbury School at Rex Weech.

The Conchs have an away game for the first time at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 26, with another District 16-4A game at Gulliver Prep.
