Monroe County School Board Meets in Key West for Its Upcoming Meeting
KEY WEST, Fla. –The Monroe County School Board will hold a workshop at 3:10 p.m., with a regular meeting beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the A.J. Henriquez Administrative Complex, for Tuesday, March 21st, 2017. Both the workshop and meeting are open to the public. They will broadcast live on Comcast Channel 78, and be available to stream online.
In addition, the school board will hear from community members with comments or concerns about a possible change in school start times beginning at 4:30 p.m. This is the second of the three forums that have been scheduled in each of the geographic regions of the school district. The first took place at Marathon High School. The third and final forum is scheduled for April 11th at Coral Shores High School Media Center.
Items on the agenda include the review and possible approval of the school calendar for the 2017-2018 school year, Social Studies textbook adoption, and the construction of the Horace O’ Bryant Middle School bus loop to reduce traffic congestion at that school location. The board will also hear a presentation by staff and students from Key West High School regarding Career and Technical Education opportunities and pathways for students.
The board will also address the potential purchase of property on Stock Island to accommodate the relocation of Transportation Department services currently located on Trumbo Road. This is a significant step in long range plan to vacate the outdated facilities located at Trumbo Point. The purchase of the approximately 1.75 acre parcel on Stock Island will provide the space needed for the Transportation Department. Superintendent Porter will recommend the approval of the contingent purchase agreement that includes several stated contingencies that must be met before the purchase is final. This purchase of real property will require a super majority vote of the school board.
The accredited Monroe County School District serves approximately 8,800 students, in the upper, middle, lower keys, and Key West. The District’s mission in an ever-changing and diverse world requires students to adapt, to learn new skills, to analyze challenges, and to overcome obstacles by “Charting the Course to Excellence”.
