Fringe Theater Opens Drama – Agnes of God

Fringe Theater Key West opens the riveting drama Agnes of God at The Studios of Key West.  It runs Jan 12 -15 and Jan 19-22 at 7pm. The play, written by John Pielmeier in 1979, was a Broadway hit turned Academy Award nominated film. The play pits faith against science and innocence against betrayal.

“It is such a powerful story,” explains the play’s director Stephen Kitsakos. “and based on true events.  It focuses on the multiple perspectives that clash when trying to explain events that seem to have no explanation.”

Agnes of God, which in Latin means “Lamb of God,” is the story of a novice nun accused of murdering a baby she insists was the result of a virgin conception. The court-appointed psychiatrist and the Mother Superior stand at odds over their perspectives (and desired outcomes), and all three women are forced to re-examine the meaning of faith and the power of love.

The cast includes Kitty Clements as the Mother Superior, Paula Cabot as the psychiatrist, and Morgan Fraga as Agnes.  “These three women have such an intriguing chemistry,” Kitsakos adds. “I think our audiences are going to find the evening compelling.”

Several programs have been scheduled around the Fringe’s production of Agnes of God.  On January 11 at 5:30 pm, the production’s guest lighting designer will present an informal talk on “The Magic (and Mayhem) of Designing for the (Temporary) Theater” in the theater space at the Studios.  Ariel Benjamin is a freelance lighting designer in New York, and a member of the United Scenic Artists, Local 829.  She assisted on the Broadway production of Book of Mormon and Chinglish and currently lights TV news personality Katie Couric for Yahoo News.

“This program is part of our new Drinks & Drama outreach series,” explains Fringe’s Artistic Director Rebecca Tomlinson.  “We think of it as a smart-happy-hour!’ TSKW wine and beer bar will open about 5pm and the free talk will begin at 5:30pm.

On January 20, Fringe offers a production Talk Back immediately following that evening’s performance of Agnes of God. The panel discussion will focus on “The Intersection of Science and Religion” and includes insights from the Rev John C Baker (Rector of the Basilica of St Mary Star of the Sea), Dr. Alan Teitelbaum (Psychiatrist), Stephen Kitsakos (director), and the cast of Agnes of God.  Audience members who would like to attend the talk back but are seeing the production on a different night and welcome to wait in the lobby until the show’s end (at about 9pm).

Agnes of God is sponsored by Cory Held and Jeffrey Grosky of Preferred Properties Realty. It runs January 12-15 and 19-22 at The Studios of Key West, located at 533 Eaton Street.  Tickets are $35 and available online at www.fringetheater.org or by calling 305-731-0581. Seating is limited so advanced ticket purchase is encouraged. Doors will open at 6:30pm for the 7pm show.
