New Staff Have Jumped Abroad The Reef Relief Ship!

Reef Relief is thrilled to announce the new staff to join the 2016-2017 team! Reef Relief is expanding our Discover Coral Reefs School Program to new schools in the Monroe Country School District, and we are launching our new Family Education Program. This means all hands on deck for our new staff!

Assistant Program Director: Carly Shabo

Carly began working for Reef Relief immediately after receiving her Bachelors of Science degree in Marine Biology from the College of Charleston. After a successful initial summer in the Coral Camp for Kids Education Intern position, Carly completed 2 years as the Education Coordinator and was recently promoted to become Reef Relief’s Assistant Program Director.  Her love for the ocean, passion for education, and commitment to conservation have inspired her to continue working to improve, protect, and preserve the local ecosystems.

Education Coordinator: Laurel Zaima

Laurel grew up in Michigan, and moved down to Florida to attend the University of Miami. She graduated from the Rosentstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science with a degree in Marine Science and Biology. She continued to migrate south after graduation, and joined the Reef Relief team as a spring intern in 2016 for the Education Program. She quickly fell in love with the island life and made Key West her home. Upon completing her Reef Relief internship, she joined the staff as the Education Coordinator and is responsible for running the Discover Coral Reefs School Program in the Monroe County School District and the Coral Camp for kids.

Fall 2016 Education Intern: Alex Risius

Alex recently graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Environmental Science and a specialization in Conservation Biology. Although Alex has lived in Michigan her entire life, she quickly found her love for the ocean after studying abroad in the Caribbean. She is very excited to intern for the education program and to be involved in Reef Relief’s positive impact for the Florida Keys!

Fall 2016 Stormwater Campaign Intern: Jamie Stafford

Jamie was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and she will graduate from Oklahoma State University with a Masters in Environmental Science upon the completion of her internship. Jamie has always dreamt of working with a conservation organization. With a background in international business and a strong interest in global sustainability, she has found a great fit with Reef Relief’s Stormwater Education Outreach Project. Jamie decided to come all the way down to Key West to join the Reef Relief’s efforts to preserve our coral reef.
